September 10, 2019–January 5, 2020

A 19th-century prosthetics workshop, a jazz club featured in the Green Book, and a Polish-American car dealership are vastly different businesses, but owners and workers at all three turned to photography to portray themselves and their work. Open for Business: Photography, Trade, and Self-Image, 1870–1950, a student-curated exhibit at Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library, examines how photography helped small business owners to advertise and represent their shops, goods, and workers. Visitors will encounter historic photographs and objects and explore how entrepreneurship and photography were intertwined. By partnering with the Delaware Historical Society, Open for Business also showcases local business histories, including popular 20th-century Wilmington locales such as The Spot Café, Elsie’s Chicken, and Federal Bakery. The exhibit includes personal interviews and crowdsourced photographs in addition to more than 30 objects from the Winterthur and Delaware Historical Society collections. It will be on view in the Winterthur Galleries.

ART IN BLOOM
Philadelphia Chapter of Ikebana International

December 6 – 8, 2019

Opening Reception: Friday, December 6, 2019
5 - 9 PM during Art Loop

Join us for a special weekend exhibition of art and Ikebana floral design. Art in Bloom will feature floral arrangements created by members of the Philadelphia Chapter of Ikebana International designed to complement and correspond to the contemporary art on display.

Ikebana is the unique, formal Japanese art of arranging flowers that traces back to the seventh-century. Once a practice reserved for Buddhist temples, it has evolved from a status symbol in Japanese homes into a contemporary art that lives in public spaces. Ikebana is informed by the surrounding environment and often seen on display around the world in museums, theaters, and restaurants.

Established in 1956, the Philadelphia Chapter of Ikebana International is a non-profit organization focusing on advancing ancient Japanese artistry and culture. The four schools represented in the Philadelphia Chapter are Ichyio, Ikenobo, Ohara, and Sogetsu. All schools freely share their characteristics, philosophical underpinnings, and historical motifs.

By integrating Ikebana with the art on display in the galleries, viewers will see evidence of a minimalist aesthetic that both interprets the artwork and respects the integrity of each floral design. Conventional and unconventional materials bring a dynamic force of strength to the overall arrangement to showcase the magnificent expressions of Zen Buddhist philosophy blossoming at the crossroads of art and nature.

Participating in this exhibition include the following members of the Philadelphia Chapter of Ikebana International representing several of the schools of Ikebana: Midori Tanimune, Marcia Borel, Mary Clare Bowlus, Audrey Chen, Lititia Chen, Debbie Dickinson, Ronell Douglass, Brandon Forsht, George Franz, Denise Gilchrist, Sarah Goetz, Linda Grieco, Maret Headley, Marlys Kerr, Chung Kim, Patty Lemmerman, Doris Liu, Phyllis Lochiatto, Cres Motzi, Mariko Ono, Carla Pastore, Ann Perry, Sima Sariaslani, Grazynka Shaarani, and Sylvia Wei.
