TIME STILLED, MY HAIR NARRATIVE
A Draper Experiment by Tia Santana

March 1 - April 28, 2019

Opening Reception: Friday, March 1
5 - 9 PM during Art Loop

The Delaware Contemporary presents TIME STILLED, MY HAIR NARRATIVE  by Tia Santana, the second exhibition of our Draper Experiment series. Santana’s work explores the mummification process through hair extensions worn by her, and questions history and permanence in both the physical and metaphorical. Santana questions adornment in the traditional practices of black culture, acceptance, transformation, and adaptation using techniques such as coil building to reference the struggle of identity. Several wall hangings of ceramic slip cast textures of various types of hair extensions will include custom ceramic beads with transferred printed imagery and text to document her narrative of hair identity and white institutionalism. Her work pushes the boundaries of clay. Hand-built coils weave, knot, and twist throughout the pieces, creating both visual and emotional responses.

Santana received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design in 2D Fine Arts and a BFA in 3D fine arts, with a fashion minor. She earned her MFA from UD in ceramics and sculpture.

It’s as if their eyes demand their fingers prove what they are seeing is really there.”
