    ANAHATA
    John Singletary

    May 3 - September 22, 2019

    Opening Reception:
    Thursday, May 2, 2019
    5 - 7 PM

The Delaware Contemporary is excited to debut new compositions added to the Anahata series of immersive multimedia installations conceived by artist John Singletary. Out from the cloak of darkness emerges a fantastical universe of images that seem to exist in both the past and the present simultaneously. Drawing from an ancient visual language, Singletary seamlessly bridges history with the contemporary by capturing his meticulous and intimate choreography with an open-spectrum camera in his one-of-a-kind UV light studio using sophisticated OLED monitors. The captivating results are the efforts of collaboration between performers, choreographers, costume designers, makeup artists, and technicians. Singletary creates the rendered images using a revolutionary photographic process that produces images true to moments in time.

Sanskrit for "unhurt" or "unbroken," the word Anahata refers to the heart chakra and the Vedic concept of the "unstruck" sound of the celestial realm. Singletary's seemingly chaotic constructions give way to visions of harmony and invocations of creations and origin. By plunging the viewer into complete darkness, Singletary recreates conditions of birth - both physical and spiritual. Light pulsating from the black offers a way out of the dark and attempts to provide answers to implied questions about genesis and the universal human condition.

"Singletary's hauntingly beautiful images in Anahata are exquisite tableaus, populated by lavishly adorned human figures that appear to be engaging in ceremonial dance, ritualist ambulation, and acts of devotional veneration. The scenes possess a universal timelessness, with pictorial elements reminiscent of Tibetan Buddhist painting, Medieval tapestry, Persian miniature painting, and deep tribal ritual of peoples from across the globe depicted in ethnographic film and photography." - Joseph Gonzales, Executive Director of The Delaware Contemporary

John Singletary is a photographer and multi-media artist based in Philadelphia, PA. He will serve as a panelist for the 2019 Gretchen Hupfel Symposium: Immanent Realms: Light, Image, Sound at The Delaware Contemporary. This Symposium will culminate in a live dance performance in conjunction with the Anahata exhibition, featuring dancer Megan Hannon. Singletary's work has been shown in museums and galleries across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

This exhibition using cutting-edge display technology will be special ticketed show.

UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE LYNN HERRICK SHARP AWARD EXHIBITION

    A Group Exhibition

    May 3 – May 26, 2019

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, May 3, 2019, 5 - 9 PM during Art Loop

In a joint venture with the University of Delaware, The Delaware Contemporary is pleased to announce the 2018-19 Lynn Herrick Sharp Award Exhibition, featuring the work of this year’s award recipient and two honorable mentions in their final stages of pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Delaware.

In September of 2009, Lynn Herrick Sharp established this award in support of the Fine Arts program at the University of Delaware to help the recipients produce and document their work. The award is presented to an art major working in photography, sculpture, printmaking or painting. During the student's junior year, portfolios are submitted to the Fine Art faculty for award consideration and the recipient for the 2018-19 Lynn Herrick Sharp Award is Deanna Wingel with honorable mentions given to Adele Kaczmarek and Cynthia Yoo. This exhibition showcases recent works by these three artists.

Lynn Herrick Sharp is a long-time supporter of The Delaware Contemporary, having served as Secretary of the Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008. She is recognized as an Emeritus Board Member for her contributions to The Delaware Contemporary and for championing contemporary art in the region.

This exhibition is coordinated by Kate Testa, University of Delaware Curatorial Fellow.

    HOPES & DREAMS/FEARS & FEELS
A Draper Experiment by Anthony Bowers

    May 3 - June 30, 2019

    Opening Reception: Friday, May 2
    5 - 9 PM during Art Loop

Anthony Bowers reflects on consumerism and waste. See-through fabric designed as “dumpsters” allow viewers to toss their conceptual and actual trash in the form of “HOPES & DREAMS” or “FEARS & FEELS.” Taking two historically transformative practices of Western religion, confession and prayer, Bowers invites viewers to acknowledge fears and shortcomings, to vocalize hopes and dreams, and then ritually discard them. Recognizing the self-promotional feedback loop of social media as a common outlet for expression in contemporary culture, Anthony Bowers believes that art is the antidote and the conduit to filling the void left by the lacuna of social and cultural importance.

Bowers received his BFA in painting from Indiana University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts.
