YOU CAN'T MAKE IT WITHOUT EVER EVEN TRYING

University of Delaware Curatorial Fellow Solo Exhibition by Kate Testa

August 2 - 29, 2019

OPENING RECEPTION:
Friday, August 2 | 5 - 9 PM during Art Loop

In a joint venture with the University of Delaware, The Delaware Contemporary is pleased to announce You Can't Make It Without Ever Even Trying, a solo exhibition of the work by Kate Testa, the 2018-19 University of Delaware Curatorial Fellow. Using mixed media and repetitive forms of translating images into ritualistic objects, Testa's work explores themes of the metaphysical and the occult while investigating how the art-making process can transcend into a spiritual practice. Using a pallet consisting of wood, fibers, glass, paper, and found objects she creates sculptural collages, ritual objects, and installations that play roles in her constructed sacred customs. Testa describes her art-making practice as "tedious and time-consuming methods to construct my work. Working in this manner allows me time to focus my energies onto objects while I am creating them to activate and impart ritual significance." Testa reproduces items such as hand-drawn prayer candles emblazoned with messages for "Healing Energy" and "Success" that are then painted with watercolor and gouache. These candles are ultimately burned in order to unleash their intended powers, their collected ashes serving as a record of the ritual. Testa's view on the absurdity of religion challenges the viewer to question her beliefs in the object's existential power in a grey space between fantasy and reality.

Kate Testa received her BFA from The Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2008 where she studied 3D fine arts with a concentration in glass. She worked professionally in the glass industry for eight years in Seattle, WA and in 2016, relocated to pursue a master's degree from the University of Delaware. In 2018, she received her MFA concentrating in sculpture, and currently serves as the Curatorial Fellow at The Delaware Contemporary. She is also an adjunct instructor at Delaware College of Art and Design and a member of the AUTOMAT Collective in Philadelphia, PA.

The traveling exhibition “The Ese’Eja People of the Amazon: Connected by a Thread” consists of photographs and daguerreotypes made by Andrew Bale and University of Delaware photography faculty Jon Cox, as well as artifacts from daily life that have been curated by Dr. Monica Dominguez Torres and Dr. Vicki Cassman. The show illustrates a worldview, a way of life and a heritage. It also illustrates the contemporary challenges facing these resilient people as Amazonia loses many of its indigenous cultures along with the deep knowledge and wisdom these cultures have of the interconnectedness of nature. After opening as part of Art Loop Wilmington on August 2, “Connected by a Thread” will continue on view in DCAD's Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays through August 15.
